End of an Era

And now, a moment of silence. Last night was the final night anyone with an oldskool X-Box could play on X-Box Live. As of now, X-Box Live is shut off for anyone with an oldskool X-Box. That means Halo 2 players on the X-Box 1 will no longer be able to play on Microsoft's X-Box servers. And don't even think about trying these BC X-Box games on 360 or download an X-Box Original on the 360.

The service was due to be switched off at midnight PDT, i.e. about 20 minutes ago.

As a result you can no longer play Xbox 1 games online in any way - not using an original Xbox, nor by playing a backwards-compatible title on Xbox 360, or even by downloading an Xbox Originals effort.

Hardest hit by this is Halo 2, which has sustained a decent following since its spectacular November 2004 launch. (Read our extensive farewell, The Making of Halo 2.)

Folks, this marks the end of a long era of X-Box Live, that brought us online play for a small fee. To you X-Box Live fans, game on.
